Thompson Washington DC, by Hyatt Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Thompson Washington DC, by Hyatt feels like discovering one of those places locals have been quietly keeping to themselves. This four-star property sits right in the Navy Yard district — honestly, one of the most transformed neighborhoods I’ve seen in Washington over the past few years. The lobby has this sleek, modern vibe without being cold or intimidating, and you immediately get the sense that someone actually thought about how real people would use this space.
The Navy Yard Advantage
Here’s what I love about this location — you’re literally steps from Nationals Park, which means game days are electric, but it’s also surprisingly quiet when there’s no baseball happening. The waterfront is right there, and I mean actually walkable waterfront with decent restaurants and that nice riverside path. You know what’s really convenient? The Navy Yard Metro station is close enough that you don’t need to think twice about getting downtown, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the usual DC tourist chaos every time you step outside.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had floor-to-ceiling windows — and I’m talking about views that actually matter, not just another building’s brick wall. The design feels contemporary but lived-in, if that makes sense. Everything works the way it should (which honestly isn’t always a given), and the bathroom has one of those rainfall showers that doesn’t feel gimmicky. Storage space is thoughtful too — they clearly considered that people travel with actual stuff these days.
Dining and Amenities
The restaurant downstairs serves solid food without the usual hotel markup attitude. Breakfast covers all the bases — continental options, but also vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices that don’t feel like afterthoughts. I appreciated that they do kosher options too, which isn’t something you see everywhere. There’s parking on-site, which in DC is basically like finding treasure, though you’ll pay for the privilege. The fitness center is well-equipped enough that you won’t feel like you’re missing your usual workout routine.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it balances being part of the city without drowning in it. Couples especially seem to get this — there’s something about the neighborhood that feels more authentic than staying right on the National Mall. You’re close enough to walk to Capitol Hill when you want that classic DC experience, but you can also grab dinner at one of the waterfront spots and feel like you’re seeing a side of the city that most visitors miss. The staff genuinely knows the area and can point you toward things that aren’t in every guidebook, which makes a difference when you’re trying to make the most of your time here.
Washington’s hotels pair policy briefings, bourbon libraries, and concierge-led monument runs at sunrise.

The location was nice, the rooms was really nice and spacious. It had a balcony but it was too hot to use it and the view from it wasn't all that impressive. Bed was very comfy too.
