Sonder The Grace Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Sonder The Grace on King Street, you immediately get that “this is exactly what I was hoping for” feeling. It’s one of those three-star places that punches way above its weight — honestly, the building has this understated elegance that makes you feel like you stumbled onto something special in Alexandria. The entrance doesn’t scream for attention, but there’s something about the way it sits on this historic street that just works.
The King Street Magic
Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re literally in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, and I mean the actual heart, not some tourist-trap version of it. King Street isn’t just pretty to look at (though it definitely is), it’s where locals actually go about their lives. You can walk to the waterfront in about ten minutes, grab coffee at spots that have been around forever, and honestly, couples seem to absolutely lose their minds over this location. I get it — there’s something romantic about cobblestone streets and 18th-century architecture that just hits different when you’re exploring together.
The Room Experience
The room itself feels more like a well-designed urban retreat than your typical hotel space. Sonder has this thing they do where everything feels intentional but not overthought — clean lines, good lighting, and that perfect balance between modern comfort and respecting the historic character of the area. You know what really impressed me? The attention to details that actually matter when you’re staying somewhere, like proper blackout options and space to actually unpack your stuff.
Getting Around and Exploring
What makes this spot really work is how walkable everything is from here. The Metro’s close enough that getting into DC is no big deal, but honestly, you might find yourself just wanting to wander around Alexandria instead. There are these little restaurant gems tucked into side streets that you’d never find if you were staying somewhere more touristy. Plus, parking in this area can be tricky, so being able to walk to most things is actually a huge relief — one less thing to stress about.
Why Guests Love It
I think what really sets The Grace apart is that it manages to feel both historic and contemporary without trying too hard at either. You’re staying in a place with real character, but you’re not sacrificing modern comfort for the experience. The location consistently gets rave reviews because it’s genuinely that good — you’re close enough to everything that matters, but you’re not dealing with the chaos of being right in the thick of tourist central. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’re experiencing the real Alexandria, not just visiting it.
To book hotel in Washington for Cherry Blossom peak, travelers claim Tidal Basin terraces blending dawn paddle boats with lantern-lit monument strolls.

Perfect location in the heart of old town Alexandria. But that has a downside. It’s easy to get to everything and the King Street free trolley service makes getting around even easier

Walking distance to a lot of things.

Great location in downtown old town Alexandria; easy walking and public transport, and plenty of diverse food options and local attractions close by. The apartment (room 205) was comfortable, clean, safe and fine – though facilities were available we did not do any cooking; but enjoyed the good coffee and tea. We enjoyed being able to open the windows (somewhat) and the very comfortable bed.
